Boys Football Match 13.10.15

October 16, 2015

On Tuesday October 13th, the Greenway boys football team played Hammond Academy in their first fixture of the season. Greenway took an early lead through Matej. However, things started to swiftly move downhill. The lead lasted no more than 5 minutes as Hammond equalised midway through the first half. Then conditions worsened, as the sun blinded Ryan for the rest of the first period and saw Hammond pull away with a 4-1 lead at half time. Changes were made and formations were adapted and the boys came out after half time ready to battle. The resistance to accept defeat was sensational & admirable! The boys did exactly as they had been instructed with a high work rate and fast pressing. This forced the opposition to repeatedly make mistakes; mistakes that would not go unpunished! Greenway got one back and moral and confidence was ever growing. Suddenly, they got another and atmosphere had clearly changed. The score was now 4-3 to Hammond and there was still more than 10 minutes to play. The boys stayed disciplined and kept plugging away at the game plan. The goal that levelled the game was imminent and it came sure enough. With the game at 4-4 and still 10 minutes left on the clock, management decided it was time for more fire power. Jacob was sent on to the pitch and his addition had an immediate impact. The ball came in from a Greenway corner and was bouncing around until it fell to Jacob. Jacob seized this moment emphatically, controlling the ball and producing a tremendous piece of skill to beat not 1 but 2 players. He had created himself a huge amount of space and he let rip with a venomous shot which the keeper could not deal with. The crowd erupted with cheers and delight as Greenway took the lead after spending large proportions of the game on the back foot! It didn’t stop here as the boys stuck to the game plan and quickly fired 3 more goals in the remaining minutes to come out as 7-4 winners in a truly remarkable game. The goals came from Matej(2), Jude(2), Finn, Jacob and Charlie. Well done to all the boys but, a special mention must go to Finn for his contribution in the second half after his half time introduction. His work rate and determination inspired the boys to surge on and never give up!
