Girls Football Match, 15.10.15

October 16, 2015

On Thursday October 15th the Greenway girls football team played against St Thomas More. This was the first game of the season and it proved to be a thriller of a local derby game with most of the girls knowing each other. There was a tremendous amount of respect shown for each other and the sportsmanship was admirable. They had prepared well and swiftly took the lead and looked on top of the game for the most part. Annie, the Greenway goalkeeper and captain, didn’t have much to do in the first half. However, when she was called upon, she dealt with everything. Greenway couldn’t quite find that second goal and as the half time whistle went, the game remained 1-0 to Greenway thanks to a powerful run and deadly strike from Erin. At halftime the girls were instructed to stick tighter their opposite number and not give them any time on the ball. The girls took the instructions in their stride looking very comfortable for the first 10 minutes for the second half. Then their patience was rewarded and they broke through to score again with a lovely goal courtesy of Erin again, who seemed to be ruthless with her finishing. The girls worked relentlessly for the whole game which meant they grew tired. This saw Thomas More creep back into the game creating more and more chances. Annie had her work cut out but she continued to deny Thomas More, pulling off some fantastic saves. The girls were then rewarded again for their patience. Alice had not stopped running and battling all game and finally got her well deserved goal. The score was now 3-0 to Greenway and the Greenway defence continued to stay solid and tight which made it difficult for the opposition. The girls kept it very simple and did not mess about when defending. The display defined the meaning of “no nonsense defending”. As the final whistle loomed a Greenway corner found the net deflecting off an opposition defender to seal the game at 4-0. Goals from Erin (2) and Alice had won the game as well as the brilliant display of defending. The Girl of the Match went to Grace for her solid display at the back which saw a clean sheet for Greenway.

Well done to all the girls and the message is onwards and upwards!
