Greenway vs Pixie’s Hill football match, 11.11.15

November 12, 2015

On November 11th, the Greenway boy’s football team played against Pixies Hill in their 3rd game of the season. This fixture was just 1 day after the dominant 10-1 victory over local rivals, St Mary’s, so the boys were in high spirits and top form.

The game got underway and Greenway again came out of the blocks quickest, creating ample opportunities to take the lead but again not quite finding the net. However, the deadlock was shortly broken by the Greenway right midfielder with a beautifully strong solo effort from Matej. Although, the widely renowned fact that you are most vulnerable when you’ve just scored, was again proven when a beaming strike from the Pixie’s Hill centre forward rippled the top corner to silence the huge home crowd attendance of roughly 10 die hard supporters. Conceding after we have scored is becoming a bit of a factor for Greenway boys football matches, likewise is scoring for fun after conceding which doesn’t displease this management team too much at all. The Greenway boys quite naturally cruised on with Matej quickly sealing his hatrick and in form Charlie notching 2 from his marauding centre back position, if we can call it that as I am not sure how much time he actually spends in defence but I can’t envisage it being any more than 3 minutes a game. With half time fast approaching the management felt it was the right time to introduced Finn to the game, as if there weren’t already any flames on the touchlines from the Greenway lightning quick sprinting department!

The second half started flat and the half time substitutes took a while to find their 5th gear, which was rather strange because most of the season has clearly been played in 6th gear. Eventually, greenway started to mount more and more attacks and Charlie also sealed his hatrick and then had a fourth for the second game in the row. This time the fourth was a rather lucky addition but we won’t complain. With the scoreline settled at 7-1, Pixie’s hill brought on their substitute keeper, who emphatically proved he should have started the game. He was simply unbeatable and you can’t help but wonder what the scoreline would have been, had this young man started the game. In reality, he didn’t so we had cruised to this result which the game ultimately ended at. Thanks again to the continuous support for the Greenway team and again to the boys for their brilliant efforts so soon after a storming win in a local derby. A special mention must be put out for our man of the match. Connor started the game in defensive and was nothing short of phenomenal. He marked his man out of the game and seemed to be clearly the Greenway defensive lines for everyone. Funnily enough, Connor asked me before the game ‘Mr Lewis, why do I always play in defence?’ Well, the shear display he put on at the back more than answered that question. In fact, unfortunately for Connor, he’ll be playing defence more often if those performances continue!
