Greenway Boy’s Football v Kings Langley 2.2.16

February 5, 2016

On Tuesday 2nd February the boys faced off against very well drilled opposition in Kings Langley. In terms of technical ability, the two teams were quite closely matched but in the first half Kings Langley’s interplay and understanding was outstanding. Greenway backed off and gave Kings a lot of respect and space, which they took advantage of with four well taken goals. Despite that, Greenway still carved out three or four excellent opportunities but the Kings keeper made some top drawer saves. The goals largely came from defenders over committing, diving in, and Kings Langley were good enough individually to beat the man, create an overload and exploit it effectively. At half time, the boys were a little dispirited but we rejigged things slightly with Kai going up front to harass the so far untroubled defenders, who were dictating play comfortably. From the outset he unsettled them and the rest of our boys capitalised. We dominated territory and possession, with Kings Langley looking a pale imitation of the team from the first half. Defensively, the boys all stood up and jockeyed, making their opponents have to work much harder to create an overload, which nullified their effectiveness. Fergus made a couple of brave stops early on, to keep us in with a shout, which proved the springboard for us to launch wave after wave of attack. We pegged them back to 4-2 and all the momentum was with us, when they broke away, got a slightly lucky bounce and drilled a good finish into the corner. We still came back strong, Charlie scored a cracking third and the opposition Manager was suddenly looking nervous, as he had lost track and thought the score was 5-4. The Game ended 5-3 and concludes the Greenway boys league games. However, we are confident we have made it through to the quarter finals so the season is not over just yet.
