Legal Eagles visit 10.03.16

March 14, 2016

Year 5 had a visit from two experienced magistrates (The Legal Eagles) so that they could learn about the Criminal Justice System in the UK.

Our visitors gave us a fascinating insight into what happens if somebody is arrested and suspected of breaking the law.

The children had the opportunity to take part in a mock Magistrates Court trial, reach a verdict and pass sentence on an unfortunate law-breaker. They played the parts of defence and prosecution lawyers; magistrates; the defendant and witnesses to the crime (one of our visitors was the Court Clerk).

Unfortunately, our suspects were found guilty and the magistrates recommended that they do community service.

Year 5 were surprised to discover that the age of legal responsibility is 10 years old in the UK!
