Yrs 5 & 6 girls football, 19.4.16

May 9, 2016

On Tuesday 19th April, Greenway sent 2 year 5/6 girls football teams to Cavendish in Hemel to compete in a tournament. Each team were in opposite pools and should they be successful would progress through to the semi finals.

Team A took their time to feel their way around their opposition. With the games lasting 7 minutes one way, scoring was surely going to be difficult. Their first 3 games saw the scoreline sit at 0-0. In fact no goals were scored in their entire group until this point. The next game, however, saw Greenway A steal a win with a 1-0 victory. They then carried this momentum onto the last game to take another victory but this time 2-0. Greenway A were fairly confident they had done enough to progress through to the semi finals as runners up.

Over in pool B, Greenway B were struggling. But considering none of the girls had played on a team together before, as well as changing the goalkeeper every game, they were doing really well and enjoying themselves. After enduring a difficult start with a 2-0 loss, the girls then went on to the second game winning 1-0, having all rallied together. The final 2 games saw another 2 unfortunate losses but the girls were in good spirts.

The presentation saw Greenway A progress through to the semi finals against the team that had knocked them out in the semi final of the football league…St Alberts. For Greenway B unfortunately their playing time ended there, finishing 4th in their group. But their supporters time was only just beginning as all of the girls came to watch Greenway A in the semis.

The semi final ended a draw and was still level after extra time so it went down to penalties. Greenway managed to take a penalties victory in sudden death to book their spot in the final against more bitter rivals. This time they would face Hobletts A who defeated them 3-0 in the group stages of the league.

The final was a hard fought match but the Hobletts team eventually came out winners meaning Greenway A’s finished in second place which is a phenomenal achievement for the day.

Well done to all girls who took part!
