Girls and Boys football final.

May 8, 2017

The girl’s and boy’s football seasons came to a climax last week with both teams having phenomenal seasons.

The girls managed to reach the finals with their unbeaten record still intact. The final was an intense game with neither side being able to break the deadlock. With 2 minutes to spare, unfortunately, Greenway conceded which put an end to their run and thus their season. The girls have performed phenomenally all year and it just appeared a bad day at the office on this occasion. Although, it must be said they never gave up for one minute and still tried to play good football throughout the game. Well done girls and thank you for one exhilarating season of football.

The boys on the other hand had to step into the lion’s den and face a team who had already claimed a 4-1 victory over Greenway in the group stages. Greenway knew they had to step up their game. Sure enough they did but the game remained level with neither side managing to break the deadlock. This forced extra time but still no goals could be conjured. This brought on the penalties. 3 penalties had to be taken with Jude and Finn offering their services without any hesitation. But 2 wouldn’t be enough, 1 more had to step forward. After a few moments of silence Conor stepped forward. We had the 3! Hobbs hill scored first and the Finn calmly slotted to the keepers right and into the side netting. 1-1, Hobbs hill scored again only to see Conor (who had stepped up to take one for the team hesitantly) absolutely rifle a strike off the top right post into the back of the net with the keeper standing no chance. 2-2, Hobbs hill again applied the pressure with a goal but Greenway skipper Jude sizzled one into the goal to make it 3-3. This meant sudden death penalties. Greenway hadn’t got this far in the thought process with only just about 3 children stepping up to take penalties. Hobbs hill missed and Henry (Year 6) confidently stepped up. He slotted home beautifully to bring the trophy home with Greenway for the first time in its history. Well done boys!

Both teams did tremendously well this season and also happen to be the most successful Greenway boys and girls football teams ever as the previous teams had never even reached the finals!
