STEMPOINT Paper Engineering Challenge 2026
STEMPOINT is a charity who are passionate about engaging and inspiring young people to explore STEM subjects. Each year they run competitions and the Greenway children in KS2 entered the ‘Create a Plant Challenge’ in the Spring term.
The children had one hour to create a plant (it did not have to be from Earth!) using only four sheets of A4 paper from the recycling bin. Scissors were allowed but no glue, or other fastenings of any kind. They were also asked to provide information about the inspiration for their creations. The classes worked in pairs and returned the paper to the recycling bin at the end.
We have some brilliant paper engineers at Greenway and are delighted to report that Georgio and Henry from Year 4 were judge to be the runners up in the LKS2 competition and Henry and Monty in Year 6 came first in the UKS2 competition.
The children (and the school) received certificates and prizes from STEMPOINT. We are very proud of them!
Here are the descriptions of their work:
Henry and Georgio Year 4
‘Our plant comes from the Fetti Jungle. The jungle got this name because the trees that grow there drop brightly coloured leaves that look like confetti.’
Henry and Monty Year 6
‘We have made a Giant Venus Fly Trap. It is particularly dangerous because (unique in the plant world) it has eyes! They have found their way to Earth from Mars and feed on every living thing they can find (especially flies). They have a special relationship with the worms that clean their stems. In return, the Fly Trap feeds the worms the flesh of their victims!’
